If you enjoy creative writing and would like to learn even more and broaden your horizons, then this single session course could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for to try something new and to step out of your comfort zone.

This session will focus on investigating different forms of fiction, in terms of what we can read, watch and listen to and will explore the different ways we can use language to tell a story across different media. You’ll have the opportunity to learn more about a range different genres and styles, from autobiographies recounting events from our lives, to reframing myths and legends and expressing ourselves through songs and lyrics.

This session aims to explore a wide range of forms of fiction, so come along and be inspired to try something new!

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • About a range of different forms of creative writing, such as autobiography, poetry, songs, short stories, myths and legends
  • How different styles of writing are associated with different forms of fiction, including comedy, tragedy and melodrama
  • Strategies and ideas for delving into something new and getting started with writing in a new form of fiction

What is it like to learn with East Riding Adult Learning and Employability?

At East Riding Adult Learning and Employability we pride ourselves on the support we give to our learners, from the very first time you contact us, to the day you achieve your goals.

If you choose to join this course you will be supported by our dedicated staff, learn in a small friendly and welcoming group, have the opportunity to take part in activities to practise your skills, be encouraged to continue to practise when you are away from the classroom and receive lots of encouragement to help you build both your skills and your confidence.

As well as working in groups, you will benefit from regular time working with your tutor, discussing your progress and planning your next steps. They will also tell you about all of the other great opportunities that you have access to including help with developing your skills, joining one of our creative skills classes or sessions to improve your health, wellbeing, confidence or resilience. If you are looking for work or aiming for a change of role, then your tutor will also make you aware of the employability programmes we have available to support you in achieving your employment goals.

Our team will be there to support you at every step of your journey and we always welcome your feedback to help us ensure that you feel safe, happy, supported and welcome.

What do I need to join the course?

This is an intermediate-level creative writing course. You should have some experience of creative writing, be interested in expanding your knowledge even further and be willing to put pen to paper in the session. You may have already completed some of our basic creative writing courses, although this is not essential.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

We recommend that you bring a notebook and a pen. If you’ve completed some creative writing sessions with us before, you might like to bring your completed work with you.

What could I do next?

If you’d like to continue learning more about this topic, you might like to enrol on one of our other creative writing courses or choose to explore our poetry courses.

You might choose instead to develop your English, maths or digital skills and work towards a qualification in these areas.

Alternatively, you may decide to learn about mental health, neurodiversity or employability skills or explore our wider course offer, which includes topics such as photography, arts and crafts and mindfulness.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
