If you enjoy creative writing and would like to learn even more and broaden your horizons, then this single session course could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for to try something new and to step out of your comfort zone.
This session will focus on exploring how creative writing can be set in different periods throughout history. To start, you’ll look at some examples of historical fiction set in different time periods, investigating the techniques the authors have used to set the scene for their story. You’ll then compare these modern takes on different eras with literature from each relevant period, identifying key themes and styles of writing, as well as considering how social contexts may have influenced the authors. You’ll have the opportunity to explore a selection of points in history and be encouraged to consider which periods appeal to you to inspire you to experiment with writing historical fiction.
This session aims to explore a specific type of creative writing that you may or may not have considered before, so come along and be inspired to try something new!
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- Techniques to help you to set your story within a chosen time period;
- How to identify key themes in writing from different historical periods;
- Which time periods are commonly used within historical fiction.

What do I need to join the course?
This is an intermediate-level creative writing course. You should have some experience of creative writing, be interested in expanding your knowledge even further and be willing to put pen to paper in the session. You may have already completed some of our basic creative writing courses, although this is not essential.
What do I need to provide for the first session?
We recommend that you bring a notebook and a pen. If you’ve completed some creative writing sessions with us before, you might like to bring your completed work with you.
What could I do next?
If you’d like to continue learning more about this topic, you might like to enrol on one of our other creative writing courses or choose to explore our poetry courses.
You might choose instead to develop your English, maths or digital skills and work towards a qualification in these areas.
Alternatively, you may decide to learn about mental health, neurodiversity or employability skills or explore our wider course offer, which includes topics such as photography, arts and crafts and mindfulness.
