If you’re new to creative writing or are aiming to broaden your skills by writing in a wider range of styles, then sign up to this course and you’ll have the opportunity to explore different genres, write in different formats and have a go at writing from your own life experience. You’ll put pen to paper from the very first session and your tutor will be on hand to offer advice and support as you experiment with new ways of writing.
You’ll start by learning about the conventions of writing in different genres and then have a go at applying what you’ve learned by writing a short story in a chosen genre. You’ll then progress to looking for inspiration from events in your own life and explore how the formats of autobiography and journal writing can be used to recount and narrate these events. Next, you’ll consider how events, whether fictional or not, can be portrayed through screenplay and monologue and explore how elements of poetry, such as rhyme and rhythm can be used to shape your writing. Finally, you’ll be supported to apply what you’ve learned on the course so far to edit and refine your writing in order to improve your work and to produce a final version of your creative writing that really showcases your skills.
You’ll come away from the course with skills and knowledge you can use to continue working on creative writing projects at home, whether you’d like to produce short stories or work on a longer piece of writing, such as a novel, a memoir or a screenplay.

What do I need to join the course?
Some basic experience of creative writing would be useful, but is not essential. You just need an interest in the subject and the willingness to get involved and to have a go at putting pen to paper.
What do I need to provide for the first session?
We recommend that you bring a notebook and a pen.
