What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

What do I need to join the course?

Once we receive your application, we will give you a call and arrange for you to speak to one of our advisors (this can be done over the telephone, via video call or face to face, whichever suits you best). They will talk to you about what you want to achieve and support you to complete an initial assessment of your skills to determine your starting point; this will help you and your advisor to ensure that you start learning on the right level, at the right time and in the right place for you.

What do I need to bring with me to the first meeting?

If your meeting is to take place in one of our centres, please bring along a notebook and pen. We are following safety guidelines so, at the moment, we are unable to provide these for you. You should also bring with you evidence of your identity (a passport, driving licence or birth certificate) and any qualification certificates.

If your meeting is taking place online as a video call or on the telephone, it is also useful to have a notebook and pen ready but the advisor will explain things to you.

What will happen at the first meeting?

You will be supported by an experienced advisor who will talk to you about what you want to achieve and why. It may be that you are looking to gain more computer and digital skills to support your children at school, to gain qualifications to help you find work or to give you more confidence when using technology in everyday life. Whatever your reason to learn, we have a course option to suit you.

After talking to your advisor, you will undertake some initial skills assessments to find out what level you are currently working at. This will let us know what you’re already good at and what you need to practise or learn. Your advisor will then be able to help you choose the best course for you.

What qualification will I get when I join a course??

Your advisor will talk to you about which of our courses lead to a nationally recognised qualification (like Certificate in IT User Skills or the new Essential Digital Skills qualifications) and which lead to an achievement certificate issued by East Riding of Yorkshire Council. A qualification can be achieved from entry level to level 2.

What will happen next?

Once you have made your decision, the advisor will give you further information about your chosen course and confirm the start date and time. We will also talk to you about what to expect on your first day of learning and ask you to take part in a short induction about what learning at one of our Adult Learning Centres is like.

Your advisor will keep in touch with you during your learning and will be in regular contact to offer support and to ask for your feedback to help us to improve.
