Do you find it difficult to plan and prepare delicious, nutritious and economical meals for one? Do you sometimes resort to expensive ready meals? If this sounds like you then come and join us to make a variety of balanced supper dishes that won’t break the bank. Find out how you can save money and time by planning ahead. You will have the opportunity to prepare a Bolognese sauce and make it into either lasagne or chilli; you will also make a fish pie and fish cakes.

During this session you will learn more about the nutritional and cost benefits of homemade cooking, you will take home what you make and receive recipe cards for the items you have cooked so that you are ready to make these again at home.

What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What do I need to join the course?

Just an enthusiasm to learn and a willingness to have a go.

Please note that East Riding of Yorkshire Council is unable to guarantee a completely allergen free environment. If you would like more information prior to booking please contact us.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

Please bring an apron with you and containers with lids to take home what you make. You will also need to bring with you the following ingredients:

Lasagne/Bolognese/chilli: 200g minced beef, 1 onion, 4 mushrooms, 1 red pepper, 1 carrot, 1 tin chopped tomatoes
(If you want to make a lasagne please also bring 3 sheets of dried lasagne and for the roux/white sauce 50g grated cheese, or for a chilli bring a tin of red kidney beans. Please also bring an oven proof container to take home what you make.)

Fish pie: 100g fish pie mix (see the supermarket freezer section for frozen fish selection(s)), 25g frozen peas, 25g frozen sweet corn, 2 large or 4 medium potatoes, 50g cheese grated and a small foil or oven proof dish.

*Please note that if you are entitled to a concession and you qualify for a free course then please talk to us as we may be able to support you with the cost of these ingredients.

How will I be taught?

You will participate in both group demonstrations and work alongside the tutor to practise the skills and techniques of preparing and presenting dishes for one.

What will I learn?

Our tutor will guide you through the processes of preparing basic recipes that may be used to create a variety of meals suitable for one person. You will also learn some useful tips and tricks on how to save money and time and how to maximize the nutritional value of your meals.

What could I do next?

Our cookery classroom opened at the Cottingham Adult Learning Centre in December 2018 and we are really excited to be able to offer a range of seasonal courses that appeal to cooks of all levels. Your tutor will discuss our range of cookery sessions with you and we will also ask you for your ideas of what you would like to see on offer in the future. Other sessions include bread making, making sweet treats, making soups, savoury and sweet treats for children, desserts, family cookery, speciality world cuisine, healthy eating, meals on a budget and pastry making.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
