If you’ve dabbled with creative writing – or perhaps completed our Getting Started course – and are keen to move on to the next level then you’ve come to the right place. On this course you’ll build on the skills learnt in Getting Started with Creative Writing as well as exploring a number of new techniques. You’ll plan and write a narrative on a specific theme stemming from a ‘what if’ or impossible element; you’ll learn techniques for writing about personal experience; you’ll work on writing about emotion and you’ll learn more about creating characters and plot.

What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What do I need to join the course?

An interest and enthusiasm to learn. You may benefit from having attended the getting started with creative writing course but this is not essential.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

You will need a notebook and pen.

How will I be taught?

You will be guided and supported by an experienced tutor and will take part in a range of activities including individual and group work. The sessions will include presentations on different aspects of creative writing as well as the chance to plan, compose and evaluate your own work in a positive and supportive atmosphere. You will also have the chance to access resources and activities through our online learning platform.

What will I learn?

During your time on the course you will:

Plan and develop your own narrative based on a selected theme, write a short narrative about a personal experience involving an overwhelming emotion, using characters and plot. Write a descriptive piece about a life-event, without naming the event itself, and learn how to edit your work and will take part in peer group appraisals.

What could I do next?

You may wish to develop your skills further with our Moving on with creative writing skills course. Your tutor will provide more information about this at the end of your course.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
