Course details

The Internet can seem like a huge and scary place. How do you know the real risks and what steps can you take to keep yourself and your family safe? On this short course, you will be introduced to some of the most common risks and learn ways to mitigate them. You will leave feeling more confident in your ability to use the Internet safely.

What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What do I need to join the course?

This course is aimed at people who have access to the Internet on a regular basis. This could be through a mobile device or a home computer. You might not know very much about the risks that you encounter online or you may be overly suspicious and reluctant to use it at all. Either way, come with an open mind and be willing to investigate and change your mindset.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

A notebook and pen. If you prefer to use your own device, (laptop, tablet or smartphone) this is fine. We have free wifi in all our classrooms.

How will I be taught?

This course will be delivered by an experienced tutor in one of our computer suites. The sessions will include demonstrations as well as group activities and individual exercises

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • about the most common risks of using the internet
  • the reasons for the risks
  • how you can protect yourself against these risks

What could I do next?

You could choose another course from our range of IT themes, such as: e-safety, online shopping or filling in online forms. You may also want to continue learning computer and digital skills by attending our improve your computer and digital skills course, where you can choose from a range of accredited or non-accredited options, or enrol on a European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) course.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
