What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

What do I need to join the course?

Although no formal qualifications are needed you should have some basic literacy skills and be interested in learning more about what a career in retail may offer. Before you join the course we will give you a call and arrange for you to come along for an informal meeting with one of our advisers who will give you more information about what is involved and help you to decide if this course is the right one for you.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

Please bring along a notebook and pen.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught and supported by an experienced tutor and will take part in a range of activities including individual work and working as part of a team. Most of this work will be classroom based and you will be supported by your tutor to complete a portfolio of evidence. You will also benefit from doing further learning and research outside of the classroom and links to electronic learning resources will be recommended and discussed.

What will I learn?

By the end of the course you will be able to:

• understand how retail outlets differ in size and type and the range of retail occupations available
• consider different forms of communication used in the workplace and demonstrate your ability to use written and oral communication methods effectively
• understand the importance of customer service to a retail business.

What qualification will I get?

On successfully completing the course you will achieve a Gateway Level 1 Award in Skills for Retail.

What could I do next?

You could progress into employment in roles such as retail assistant, sales assistant or customer adviser or some learners go on to take up a retail apprenticeship, or further retail qualifications. Your tutor will provide you with more details about these courses plus a range of other vocational courses that we have on offer.
