Course details

Do you ever wonder how to start a conversation with someone about health or wellbeing issues? Maybe you have a friend, neighbour, colleague, or customer who you worry may be lonely or isolated. Perhaps you would like to talk to them about local activities they can get involved in which might help to improve their physical or mental health.

Healthy Chats is a national programme that has been developed to teach residents how to have a helpful conversation about a range of health information, and how to support and signpost people to get that extra help. This is not aimed at telling someone how to live their life, but, by making every contact count, you might be able to encourage somebody that you know to make different choices and perhaps change their behaviour, by focusing more on self-care.

Everyone who comes into contact with members of the public and has the opportunity to have a conversation to improve health and wellbeing has the potential to make their contact count, so if this applies to you then come along and find out how you can support and signpost others towards a better lifestyle.

This two hour course is free.

What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What do I need to join the course?

You do not need any prior skills, just a desire to promote health and wellbeing

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

Please bring along a notebook and pen. We are following safety guidelines so, at the moment, we are unable to provide these for you.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught by an experienced tutor who will talk you through how to start a healthy chat and how to make every contact count.

What will I learn?

On this course you will learn:

  • how to start a healthy chat conversation with others you come into contact with in order to promote and support lifestyle behaviour changes
  • how to confidently talk to people about available local opportunities which may help to reduce social isolation and loneliness and promote improved health and wellbeing
  • how to find out what opportunities are available locally to signpost people to.

What could I do next?

We have a range of other health and wellbeing courses that you might be interested in learning more about. Your tutor will talk to you about these during the course.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
