Course details

Everyone is talking about Healthy Chats, but what is it exactly and how can you get involved in your local community? Part of the national Making Every Contact Count (MECC) programme, Healthy Chats has been developed to enable local residents to have greater access to health and wellbeing support services. Healthy Chats are not aimed at telling someone how to live their life, instead it encourages conversations based on behavior change methodologies and provides greater access to local support opportunities, empowering healthier lifestyle choices and exploring the wider social issues that influence all of our health.

If you’re interested in helping to create a healthier population by delivering Healthy Chats training out in your local community, then this ‘train the trainer’ course is for you! You will explore the MECC toolkit which includes delivering Healthy Chats training with others to support lifestyle changes, signposting to local opportunities that are available, helping to reduce social isolation and loneliness and generally promoting improved health and wellbeing.

This course is free to you if you meet the criteria to join (see below).

What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What do I need to join the course?

You should be working or volunteering, and have identified a need to deliver the Healthy Chats training to residents, in order to spread the word, raise awareness and offer support to residents to make improved lifestyle choices. Ideally you will have some experience of delivering training or education, however, this is not essential as lots of help and advice will be provided.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

You might find it useful to bring a notepad and pen.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught by an experienced tutor who will talk you through the delivery of the Healthy Chats training and will also include some basic training on teaching and learning skills to ensure that the training you go on to deliver will make a positive difference.

What will I learn?

  • how to use the Healthy Chats training with others that you come into contact with in order to support lifestyle behaviour change opportunities
  • how to confidently talk to residents about local opportunities that are available to help reduce social isolation and loneliness or to help promote improved health and wellbeing.
  • how to confidently talk to residents about local opportunities that are available to help reduce social isolation and loneliness or to help promote improved health and wellbeing
  • how to promote and use the www.mecclink.co.uk website to support you in your ability to ask, assist and act as part of the Healthy Chats approach
  • how your contribution will support the regional development and evaluation of the MECC outcomes.

What could I do next?

We offer a range of other health and wellbeing courses that you might be interested in learning more about. Your tutor will talk to you about these during the course.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
