Are you new to using spreadsheets and need to learn the basics? Have you recently moved roles and need to use spreadsheets differently? If your answer is yes, then our Excel Fundamentals course is right for you.

It will cover all the essential and fundamental skills needed to work with spreadsheets, including things like creating a basic spreadsheet, formatting cells, and creating basic search elements. It will also cover some of the tools you can use to help make tasks more effective and efficient.

Whether you want a great foundation of Excel skills to build on, or you just need to understand the basics, this is a great place to start.

Why doesn’t this course have a date?

This page is here so that you can register your interest in the course if it is not currently scheduled or if you are unable to attend any of the dates we have available on the course booking system. If you apply for this course we'll register your interest in it and let you know when more dates become available.

What do I need to join the course?

You will be require your staff laptops and have access to Teams, Office 365, and Excel. If you wish to attend, but do not have access to a staff laptop, please speak to your line manager to find out if you can loan a laptop for the training.  If this is not possible, please contact the training support team eryctraining.support@eastriding.gov.uk  and we will see if we can provide you with the use of a laptop.   

If you are unsure about any of the above, then look at attending Microsoft Teams Foundation first.

When we receive your enrolment to join this course, we will contact you to discuss your current level of ability and find out more about what you are hoping to learn on the course. This way we can make sure that this is the right course for you.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

Please ensure you come with the following:

  • Your council laptop to work on.
  • Your council login details.
  • Access to Microsoft Teams, Office 365, and Excel
  • You may also wish to have a notepad and a pen available to make notes.

What is it like to learn with Learning Skills and Workforce Development?

This course will be delivered by an experienced tutor using a variety of methods. The sessions will include demonstrations as well as group activities and individual exercises, set within the context of a typical work environment. There will be opportunities for you to ask questions and engage in topical discussions.

What will I learn?

On this course, we will cover:

  • Excel interface and terminology
  • Formatting cells and inputted data within Excel
  • Basic formulas and functions
  • Filtering
  • Making Data stand out based on the value
  • Restricting Data entry
  • Using a basic IF Function
  • Creating a totals sheet separate from your data
  • Creating a search box using the VLookup Function to return information based on a given value from within your data
  • The final session will also demonstrate an example of an advanced formula.
