Dyspraxia (also known as developmental co-ordination disorder, or DCD) is a condition that affects physical co-ordination. It tends to be diagnosed in children aged around five, but is present from birth and can cause issues into adult life. This virtual course will help you understand how it works and the different ways in which it can affect people. On this Level 1 Dyspraxia awareness course you’ll learn about the typical characteristics of dyspraxia, and the different ways in which it can affect people. You’ll find out how to identify possible social, emotional and behavioural effects of dyspraxia, and you’ll identify some of the key learning difficulties experienced by individuals with dyspraxia. You’ll then begin to investigate some of the ways in which dyspraxia can affect an individual’s ability to participate and function in everyday life, and you’ll start to discover some of the strategies and interventions that can be used to support them. This course is suitable for anyone that wants to learn more about dyspraxia, and could be particularly helpful for those working – or planning to work – in an educational support role.

What do I need to join the course?

All you need is an interest in helping others and enthusiasm to learn. You may have already attended our Introduction to Dyspraxia or Try Understanding Neurodiversity courses, but this is not essential. If you are currently studying or plan to study topics such as counselling, mental health, supporting teaching and learning in Schools (STLS), teaching or working with children, this would be an ideal course to expand your knowledge.

As the course is being delivered virtually through Microsoft Teams you will need to ensure that you are able to connect to the internet, have a web browser (e.g. Google chrome, Microsoft Edge) and are able to follow the links to take part in the virtual activities. This will include having some basic computer skills, including being able to use a keyboard and mouse.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

This course is delivered via virtual learning on Microsoft Teams. You will not need to attend any classroom delivery but you will need to commit to attending the virtual sessions at the specified dates and times. In order to participate in the virtual sessions you will need access to the following:

Computer/Laptop/Tablet
Headset/earphones if required, including a microphone (unless you are able to work in an area where you will not be disturbed/disturb others
A reliable internet connection
An email address to access the virtual classroom
A means of using video conferencing e.g. integrated webcam, webcam, tablet with camera
Teams app downloaded (free download is available)
You may find it useful to have a notebook and pen to make notes and you may be asked to submit work back to your tutor, therefore the ability to produce a text or word document that you can upload or email to your tutor will be beneficial.

How will I be taught?

Your eLearning will be supported online by an experienced tutor through small and large group discussions, video clips, and reading materials. You will also be invited to develop your skills and understanding through wider reading between sessions.

Attendance at all sessions is important if you are to receive the full benefits of this course. You will be given the opportunity to have one to one tutorials with your tutor to discuss personal progress.

What will I learn?

You will learn all about what dyspraxia is and what the common signs are, as well as how it affects people in their learning and in their everyday lives. You will also learn about how to support people with dyspraxia and how they can be affected socially, emotionally and behaviourally.

What qualification will I get?

Level 1 Award in Dyspraxia Awareness (from Gateway Qualifications).

What could I do next?

You can progress to the Level 2 Award in Dyspraxia Awareness or you may be interested in our other courses on dyslexia, Asperger’s and ADHD. You tutor will be able to give you more information about these options.
