Course details

Are you dyslexic or know someone who is? Do you want to learn about dyslexia to be able to help others, or are you just curious about what it actually is? If you’d like to find out more, sign up to this three-hour virtual session to gain an understanding of this neurodiverse condition and learn all about how it can affect individuals in terms of their life, learning and work. You’ll come away with an understanding of the traits associated with dyslexia and an awareness of the help and support that is available to children and adults who have been diagnosed with this neurodivergent condition.

What do I need to join the course?

This course is an ideal starting point for beginning to learn about neurodiverse conditions and neurodiversity in general; no previous knowledge or experience is necessary.

If you are currently studying or plan to study topics such as counselling, mental health or working with children, this would be an ideal course to expand your knowledge.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

In order to join this virtual learning course you will need:

  • A reliable internet connection, a webcam or camera and a computer or laptop. You may also choose to use a headset or earphones with a microphone attachment. You should ensure that you have a suitable place to study that is free from any distractions.
  • You will need to have access to Microsoft Teams, which is available as a free download. One of our Customer Information Assistants will call and support you before the course begins to make sure that you have everything set up ready to access your virtual session.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught and supported online by a friendly and knowledgeable tutor and take part in individual and group work and discussions.

What will I learn?

You will learn about a range of traits associated with living with dyslexia and how these can affect individuals differently. With an emphasis on raising awareness and understanding, you’ll find out how to go about gaining a diagnosis and you’ll learn about a range of strategies that individuals might find helpful to use for coping with dyslexia in different aspects of their daily lives. You’ll explore the different kinds of help and support that are available for both adults and children, so you can come away with a greater understanding of this neurodivergent condition and how you can go about accessing support for yourself, or for others with a diagnosis.

What could I do next?

You may also progress to one or more of our other short neurodiversity courses, such as Understanding Dyspraxia, Understanding ADHD or Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder.

You might also like to learn about mental health by enrolling on one of our qualifications, such as the Level 1 Award in Mental Wellbeing, Level 1 Award in Mental Health Awareness or Level 2 Certificate in Awareness of Mental Health Problems.

You might choose instead to work towards a qualification in English, maths or digital skills, or to develop your employability skills to help you to apply for a job, create or update your CV or improve your interview skills.

Alternatively, you may decide to explore our wider course offer, which includes subjects such as mindfulness, mental toughness and self-esteem and confidence building.

Can we help you to learn?
