Whether you have considered working in social care before or find yourself at a crossroads in life and are looking to find new opportunities this introductory short course is a great place to start finding out more.
Anyone can begin a career in social work, you don’t need lots of experience or qualifications but what you do need is a genuine passion and desire to help people and to make a difference. One of the greatest gifts you can give to someone is your time and attention, so if you have ever wondered how great it would be to get paid for sharing your time then come along to this free course and take that first step.
Maybe you love singing, crafting, baking or knitting and are looking for an opportunity to share these skills whilst also making a huge difference to people’s lives. Perhaps you want to take time to remember stories from years ago, laugh at how fashion has changed, enjoy a game of dominoes or cards, dance to your favourite music or share your own unique hidden talents?
All of this is possible when you work in Social Care.
Whatever your talents, by the end of this course you should have a much better idea whether a career in care is right for you. You'll also have an overview of what your next steps could be - including the option to progress onto level one and two qualifications with us. No previous experience or qualifications are needed - if you decide to work towards a rewarding career in Health and Social Care with us, we'll support you every step of the way.
What do I need to join the course?
No prior knowledge or experience of health and social care is required, just a desire to know more. As the course is being delivered virtually through Microsoft Teams you will need to ensure that you are able to connect to the internet, have a web browser (e.g. Google chrome, Microsoft Edge) and are able to follow the links to take part in the virtual activities. This will include having some basic computer skills, including being able to use a keyboard and mouse.
What do I need to provide for the first session?
This course is delivered via virtual learning on Microsoft Teams. You will not need to attend any classroom delivery but you will need to commit to attending the virtual sessions at the specified dates and times. In order to participate in the virtual sessions you will need access to the following:
- Computer/Laptop/Tablet
- Headset/earphones if required, including a microphone (unless you are able to work in an area where you will not be disturbed/disturb others
- A reliable internet connection
- An email address to access the virtual classroom
- A means of using video conferencing e.g. integrated webcam, webcam, tablet with camera
- Teams app downloaded (free download is available)
- You may find it useful to have a notebook and pen to make notes and you may be asked to submit work back to your tutor, therefore the ability to produce a text or word document that you can upload or email to your tutor will be beneficial.
If you are unsure about how to join a virtual learning session please contact us as soon as possible, but at the latest 2 working days prior to your course starting. We will then arrange for one of our Personal Advisors to contact you and talk you through how to access the sessions.

How will I learn?
Your learning will be supported online by an experienced tutor through small and large group discussions, video clips, and reading materials. You will also be invited to develop your skills and understanding through wider reading between sessions. Attendance at all sessions is important if you are to receive the full benefits of this course. You will be given the opportunity to have one to one tutorials with your tutor to discuss personal progress.
What will I learn?
On this course you will learn:
- you will gain a basic overview of Health and Social Care roles including how you might work with Service Users and support them to achieve their own outcomes
- you will be given a brief outline about personal development opportunities within the sector
- you will be given a brief outline of the key responsibilities and duties involved in social care roles
- you will gain a basic understanding of the importance of clear and timely communication
