Are you looking to enhance your existing word processing skills further? Maybe you have mastered the basics but wonder what other functionality you could use to make tasks easier? If you are looking to take your Word processing skills to the next level then this is the course for you. It will cover advanced skills in word to help you create professional looking documents and templates to utilise within your job role and support the work we do in the council. This is an interactive course and you will need to bring with you a document you have worked on or are currently working on. During this course you will work on your individual documents, making sure that you are carrying out tasks in the most effective way and also learning more about what is possible within the software.

What do I need to join the course?

You may have completed the Word fundamentals course, or you may already be using a good range of Word skills and are looking to improve further. When we receive your application to join this course we will contact you to discuss your current level of ability and find out more about what you are hoping to learn on the course. This way we can make sure that this is the right course for you. To join this course you will need to talk with a tutor prior to enrolment to make sure you have chosen the right level. You will also need to discuss this with your line manager and then apply via UnitE. In order to join this virtual learning course you will need:

A reliable internet connection, a webcam / camera and a computer/Laptop/Tablet, you may also choose to use a headset or earphones with a microphone attachment. It is likely you will need access to your workplace systems to try out any skills learnt. You may also wish to have a notepad and pen available for making any notes. You should ensure that you have a suitable place to study that is free from any distractions.

You will need to have access to Microsoft Teams, which is available as a free download.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

You will need to consider the type of Word skills that you are looking to develop. Ideally bring a work related task with you to your studies, this could be something you have been asked to do or something you are wanting to try to do. You may also wish to have a notepad and pen available to make notes.

How will I be taught?

This course will be delivered virtually by an experienced tutor using a variety of methods. The sessions will include demonstrations as well as group activities and individual exercises, set within the context of a typical work environment. There will be opportunities for you to ask questions and engage in topical discussions.

What will I learn?

On this course you will learn how to:

  • use tools to edit and enhance your documents
  • insert hyperlinks and make use of these tools for efficiency
  • apply techniques to carry out a mail merge
  • explore document creation techniques and add version control
