Optical art (or Op art for short) uses clever techniques to create an optical illusion in a still image. It could be an illusion of movement, a perceived third dimension or an image hidden within an image. On this beginners course you’ll look at some famous examples of Optical art and find out more about the techniques and styles used. You’ll also work with tutor support to create your own unique piece of Optical art to take home and keep.

What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What do I need to join the course?

No experience of drawing and painting is required for this course, just an enthusiasm to learn.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

You may wish to bring a sketchbook, pencils and erasers.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught and supported by an experienced and enthusiastic tutor, take part in a range of activities including demonstrations, group and individual work and receive support for your own ideas.

What will I learn?

On this short course you will briefly explore the origins of op art – look at some of the more famous images from this time and then, with tutor support, have a go at creating your own op art image to take home with you.

What could I do next?

You may wish to develop your skills further by enrolling on one of our other art courses, or take part in other creative subjects such as photography, knitting, dressmaking, creative writing and fabric dyeing and printing. We also offer courses in English, maths, computers and employability.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
