Pop art is a movement that started in the US and UK in the mid to late 1950s, characterised by its bold, bright colours and appropriation of imagery from popular culture. On this session you’ll learn about the history of the movement, then look at, review and discuss some famous pop art images. Then you’ll get to have a go at creating your own pop art masterpiece to take home with you, using some of the techniques you’ve learnt about.

What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What do I need to join the course?

No experience of drawing and painting is required for this course, just an enthusiasm to learn.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

You may wish to bring a sketchbook, pencils and erasers.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught and supported by an experienced and enthusiastic tutor, take part in a range of activities including demonstrations, group and individual work and receive support for your own ideas.

What will I learn?

On this short course you will briefly explore the development of pop art and be encouraged to create your own image using colour, shapes and graphics.

What could I do next?

You may wish to develop your skills further by enrolling on one of our other art courses, or take part in other creative subjects such as photography, knitting, dressmaking, creative writing and fabric dyeing and printing. We also offer courses in English, maths, computers and employability.
