Whether taking part in counselling training will help you start a new career or you would like to use counselling skills in your current life or work, this Introduction to Counselling course provides you with an overview of what the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling course will involve, ways in which you can apply the skills learned and the opportunity to find out about the role of a counsellor. This introductory course will help you decide whether to progress to our level 2 counselling courses in order to further your studies.

This course is delivered via remote learning. You will not need to attend any physical delivery but you will need to commit to attending the remote session at the specified date and time as well as undertaking 1 hour of independent study per week.

What do I need to join the course?

You will need to have a level 2 qualification in English. Prior to joining this course you will have a one to one discussion with one of our learning advisors to ensure that this course is right for you and that you have the required access to online learning.

  • an A4 ring binder, notebook and pen
  • Access to a Webcam, microphone, via a computer, laptop, tablet, mobile phone or any other mobile devices
  • Internet access
  • Internet browser (compatibility with Microsoft Teams)
  • Email account

How will I be taught?

This course is an online learning module. You will do online learning then will have the chance to test your understanding of the material. You will be expected to carry out work and research away from the classroom in order to gain the required skills and knowledge. Attendance at all sessions is essential if you are to be successful. Each week there will be an online video chat group tutorial. You will also be given the opportunity to have a one to one tutorial with your tutor each week if you wish. Teaching will be through weekly discussion, watching video clips, taught objectives through powerpoint, reading materials, quizzes, short practical sessions using skills taught.

On the course you will:

  • Learn about ways in which counselling skills may help in various contexts
  • Begin to understand the skills of active listening
  • Be able to discuss with others the concept of personal values and identify your own values
  • Understand more about different types of questioning, including closed questioning
