Machine embroidery is a technique used by hobbyists and crafters to decorate all sorts of textiles, from quilts and pillows to wall hangings. It’s a fun and relaxing way to make your own unique soft furnishings, and on this four week course you’ll learn the basics of several different techniques.

Through the course you’ll work with your tutor to come up with ideas for your own creation that you’ll complete in class and take home with you at the end of the course.

So whether you already have a sewing machine at home and you’d like to be able to use it more creatively or you just want to try your hand at something new, this is the perfect opportunity to learn how to make your own unique craft items.

What do I need to join the course?

Enthusiasm to learn more! You do not need to have any previous experience or knowledge of embroidery to join the course although a basic knowledge of how to use a sewing machine would be an advantage.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

Please bring your own fabrics and other pieces of material that you want to use or incorporate into your work. Your tutor will advise you on what other materials you will need during the first session.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught and supported by an experienced tutor and will take part in a range of activities including group and individual work. You will be able to take home what you make!

What will I learn?

On this course, you will learn:

  • how to set the machine up and work safely
  • how to follow a pattern/ sketch on fabric
  • how to use free stitched pattern/sketch embroidery using free hand and standard machine settings
  • you will also plan and complete a project with stitched samples and inspirations to support ideas

What could I do next?

You may wish to develop your skills further with our developing machine embroidery skills course. Your tutor will provide more information about this at the end of your course. You may also consider some of our other courses such as pottery, soft furnishings, art, mindfulness and photography or computer skills, English, maths and employability courses.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
