Modern day life is full of change and challenges. It’s good to have a ‘go to’ hobby which you can pick up easily, at any time, to aid relaxation and reduce stress levels. Research has shown that knitting can help reduce anxiety and depression, slow the onset of dementia and distract from chronic pain. The repetitive movements, concentration on the pattern and the feeling of achievement once a product is completed all help to support health and wellbeing. On this course you will learn the basics of knitting and will make a pair of easy fold-over garter stitch slippers or a simple hat, making and adding decorations of your own choice. We will also talk about how to knit ‘mindfully’ – being ‘in the moment’ and concentrating on a single activity as an aid to relaxation.

What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What do I need to join the course?

This course is aimed at beginners and no prior knowledge of the craft is required.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

Please bring:

  • 1 x pair of size 10 (3.25mm) knitting needles
  • 2 x 100g balls of 4ply wool

If you decide to knit the slippers or the hat you may need to purchase further materials later in the course, the tutor will talk to you about this.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught and supported by an experienced tutor and will take part in a range of activities including demonstrations, group and individual work. You may wish to carry out work outside the classroom to help you practise and apply the skills and knowledge that you gain.

What will I learn?

On this course, you will learn the basics of mindfulness and how to carry out knitting activities in a mindful and relaxing way. This will include identifying sources of stress in your own life and how to apply your new skills to help you to relax in your daily life. Over the six sessions you will also learn the art of knitting in different styles and will create a small knitted item to take home as a reminder of your achievement and participation.

What could I do next?

You may wish to develop your skills further with our Knitting for relaxation step 2 course. Your tutor will provide more information about this at the end of your course.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
