If you’d like to make a start with your own creative writing then this is the course for you. You’ll work in a group to learn about different styles of creative writing and look at some of the different techniques authors can use before putting pen to work on your own writing. You’ll find out about how to use a protagonist and antagonist in your stories, how to build a simple plot line and how to work with mood changes. You’ll also learn editing techniques to improve your writing style.

What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What do I need to join the course?

You don’t need any knowledge of the subject or previous experience. Just an interest and enthusiasm to learn!

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

Please bring along a notebook and pen. We are following safety guidelines so, at the moment, we are unable to provide these for you.

How will I be taught?

You will be guided and supported by an experienced tutor and will take part in a range of activities including individual and group work. The sessions will include presentations on different aspects of creative writing as well as the chance to plan, compose and evaluate your own work in a positive and supportive atmosphere. You will also have the chance to access resources and activities through our online learning platform.

What will I learn?

During the course you will learn about character pairs and how to use these to create a simple plot line. You will also learn about mood changes in writing and editing techniques to improve your finished piece.

What could I do next?

You may wish to progress to our ‘developing creative writing skills’ course. Your tutor will provide more information about this at the end of your course.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
