On this short course you will be introduced to the key principles of developmental milestones from birth to adolescence including the physical, mental, emotional and social aspects.

Whether you are interested in child development as a way to help understand your own family or you would like to boost your CV for roles in educational or caring settings you’ll find that this course provides a good grounding.

What do I need to join the course?

You do not need any prior knowledge of this subject to join this course, just an interest in the subject.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

You may find it useful to have a notebook and pen to make notes and you may be asked to submit work back to your tutor, therefore the ability to produce a text or word document that you can upload or email to your tutor will be beneficial.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught and supported on this course by an experienced and enthusiastic tutor, take part in a range of activities including research, group and individual work and receive support for your own ideas.

  • about cognitive learning theories
  • the ways in which children acquire/develop their language skills
  • about memory development in children and adolescents
  • about the nature vs. nurture debate
  • the characteristics and milestones of moral development
  • findings from social learning theory research (Bandura)
  • cultural difference in expectations of child and adolescent development
