Are you asked to Chair or lead meetings, or perhaps you are moving to a new role, and find that you will have to do this for the first time? Maybe you have to attend lots of meetings and want to improve your confidence in making contributions?

If so then this session would be ideal for you to attend. You will learn a range of tips and techniques to help improve and develop your skills to be able to chair and participate in meetings confidently and effectively. The session will start by thinking about how to prepare for the meeting. This will include ensuring that you know who will be attending, set or read the agenda and provide or understand the objectives of the meeting. Moving on to the meeting itself we will explore how to lead and/or participate in the meeting with confidence, ensure you and others stay focused on the objectives, strategies for facilitating discussions, understanding constructive and healthy debate and making decisions. Finally, we will look at concluding the meeting and ensuring that all are clear about any action points and what will happen next.

What do I need to join the course?

As the course is being delivered virtually through Microsoft Teams you will need to ensure that you are able to connect to the internet, have a web browser (e.g. Google chrome, Microsoft Edge) and are able to follow the links to take part in the virtual activities. Although there are no official prerequisites to the course, there will be a need to be open minded and be prepared to reflect on yourself and areas for development.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

This course is delivered via virtual learning on Microsoft Teams. You will not need to attend any classroom delivery but you will need to commit to attending the virtual sessions at the specified dates and times. In order to participate in the virtual sessions you will need access to the following:

  • Computer/Laptop/Smartphone/Tablet
  • Headset/earphones if required, including a microphone (unless you are able to work in an area where you will not be disturbed/disturb others
  • A reliable internet connection
  • An email address to access the virtual classroom
  • A means of using video conferencing e.g. integrated webcam, webcam, smart phone/tablet with camera
  • Teams app downloaded (free download is available – https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/microsoft-teams/download-app

How will I be taught?

The training will be delivered virtually via MS Teams. Your learning will be supported online by an experienced trainer, tutor led delivery with powerpoint slids and learner interaction. You will be able to take part in discussions/breakout groups and share your thoughts.

What will I learn?

This session aims to equip learners with the knowledge to be able to plan, prepare and chair a meeting with confidence; following this session the learner will be able to:

  • Plan and Prepare in advane of the meeting, whether you are the Chair, Minute Taker or Participant
  • Understand the different roles and how to facilitate or take part in discussion
  • Understand how to conduct or participate in meetings following business conventions
  • Manage the appropriate documentation before, during and after meetings
  • Tips and tricks to develop your skills to chair and/or participate in meetings effectively
