What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

What do I need to join the course?

Just an enthusiasm to learn! No previous experience of writing poetry is necessary for this course.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

You might like to bring along a notepad and pen and perhaps some notes on what you’d like to write about.

How will I be taught?

You will be guided and supported by an experienced tutor and will take part in a range of activities including individual and group work. You will have the chance to plan, compose and evaluate your own work in a positive and supportive atmosphere.

What will I learn?

In this Try session you will learn how to use ‘mind mapping’ techniques to generate ideas and language. A mind map is a tool for the brain that captures the thinking that goes on inside your head – it helps you think, collect knowledge, remember and create ideas. You will learn how to put together a blank verse poem to a prompt and look at the composition and traditions of some simple poetry forms such as Haikus and limericks.

What could I do next?

You may wish to develop your writing skills further by attending our poetry or creative writing courses or perhaps join one of our other courses such as dressmaking, knitting or photography. We also offer courses in computer skills, English, maths and employability.
