Course details

Are you ready to take the next step in your poetry writing? If you have a good knowledge of poetry already (our Getting Started with and Developing Poetry courses are a great starting point) then this four week course will help you to move on to more advanced compositions.

You’ll bolster your skills with new techniques and styles, and you’ll learn how – and why – to implement them into your own writing. You’ll also have time in each session to workshop with your peers, developing your unique ideas and styles together.

What do I need to join the course?

It would be useful for you to have attended our Getting started with and Developing Poetry courses; if not you should have a basic grounding in poetry writing.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

Bring something to write with and on, notebook and pen, laptop, tablet etc.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught in a small, friendly group by our enthusiastic and experienced tutor. You will explore poets and poetry that demonstrate the concepts you are learning. The sessions are interative and will produce your poetry through a workshop environment. You will be able to share your poetry with your peers and give/receive feedback.

The two hour sessions are divided into one hour of new knowledge/learning, and one hour of a poetry workshop environment for learners to apply, practice and also share for peer review/feedback.

What will I learn?

You will:

  • choose and complete a writing activity (either narrative or lyric).
  • complete a writing activity using free verse.
  • use blank verse – complete a writing exercise on iambic pentameter.
  • experiment with dramatic monologue – complete a personae writing activity.

The two hour sessions are divided into one hour of new knowledge/learning, and one hour of a poetry workshop environment for learners to apply, practice and also share for peer review/feedback.

What could I do next?

You may wish to continue your learning in this area by joining our Extending Poetry Skills course. We offer courses in Creative writing, arts and crafts as well as English, maths and ICT.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
