Course details

On this free Try course you’ll learn about some of the features of Microsoft Excel. Excel is a powerful application for creating and editing spreadsheets, capable of anything from simple calculations to complex multi-function arithmetic. You’ll learn the basics of creating and formatting spreadsheets, including how to input data into cells and use simple formulae to manipulate it. By the end of the session you’ll have created your own spreadsheet, which you can save to work on later. You’ll find out more about our team of tutors and our learning centres and have the opportunity to learn about follow-on courses.

What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What do I need to join the course?

You don’t need any previous experience, just a willingness to come and take part.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

We recommend that you bring a notebook and a pen. If you have your own laptop with Microsoft Excel software installed, you are welcome to bring it.

How will I be taught?

This course will be delivered by a friendly and experienced tutor in one of our computer suites. This hands-on session will include demonstrations as well as group activities and individual exercises.

What will I learn?

During the session you will participate in some basic spreadsheet activities to get you started using Microsoft Excel. The session will include opening the Excel application and will give you an intro to using worksheets, typing in cells, formatting techniques and using basic formulas. You will gain further insight into what spreadsheet software can do and put some of your new learning into action. The tutor will explain how these digital skills can benefit you at home and/or work, and what else you could learn on a follow on course.

What could I do next?

Once you’ve attended this course you’ll be in a position to decide whether you wish to continue to learn more about the subject and perhaps sign up to our ‘computers for complete beginners’ or ‘computers for improvers’ courses. Alternatively if an accredited qualification is something you aspire to then enrolling on our ‘improve your computer and digital skills’ courses would be a great starting point. If you want to try a different subject then we offer a range of opportunities in English, maths, employability, creative skills, retail, photography, supporting teaching and learning in schools (STLS) and much more.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
