Do you wish that you had more confidence in your English and want to improve your skills? Do you struggle to use the correct spelling and punctuation when you write, or find that your reading skills are not as good as you’d like them to be? If so, then this course will give you the support you need to develop all aspects of your English, build your confidence and gain a qualification to show off your skills.

Our Improve Your English classes are focused 11-week programmes to enable you to boost your English skills and to gain a nationally recognised Functional Skills English qualification at Entry Level 1, 2 or 3.

You’ll start your learning by coming along to an informal ‘Achieve your English goals’ session, where you’ll meet one of our tutors, discuss what it is you want to achieve and do some skills checks to ensure that you are learning at a level that is right for you.

To support you to achieve your qualification there is an expectation that you will complete a minimum of one hour of independent study per week to ensure that you are ready for your assessments; your tutor will discuss this with you and ensure that you have the support you need to achieve your goals.

What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. If you choose to attend one of our classrooms in a centre then things will look different, but our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and are really excited to welcome learners back. Of course, if you choose to attend our virtual classroom from home, then that is fine too. Our staff and tutors have been really busy over the last few months ensuring that we can provide you will the same quality of teaching and learning virtually as we do in the classroom.

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What will I learn?

You will be able to develop your skills in the three main aspects of English:

You’ll practice reading texts on different topics and learn how to pick out key information and details. You’ll also learn different methods for working out the meanings of words, including using the dictionary and building up knowledge your of prefixes, suffixes and word types.

You’ll learn how to write in a way that is clear and detailed and also learn a range spelling and grammar rules to improve your writing. You’ll also learn how to use punctuation, such as capital letters and question marks.

Speaking, listening and communication:
You’ll learn how to communicate information and to give your opinion on a range of topics, both on a 1-1 basis and within a small group.

What is it like to learn with East Riding Adult Learning and Employability?

At East Riding Adult Learning and Employability we pride ourselves on the support we give to our learners, from the very first phone call, right through to achieving your learning aims and beyond to ensure that you have the skills, knowledge and resources you need to reach your goals.

When you enrol onto this English course your tutor will work with you to give you advice on the best ways to develop your skills and which level of qualification you should work towards. They will discuss with you all of the support we have available and together you will plan out your learning journey.

All of our English support sessions and functional skills courses take place in small, friendly and welcoming classes, where you will have the opportunity to take part in activities to practice your skills both independently and as part of a group.

You’ll have regular 1-1 time with your tutor to discuss your progress and to identify opportunities for further development. Your tutor will work with you to make sure that you always have the support you need and will also give you information about opportunities to develop your maths or digital skills, exercise your creativity or improve your health and wellbeing. If you’re looking for work or aiming for a change of role, then your tutor will make you aware of the employability programmes we have available to support you in achieving your employment goals.

What do I need to join the course?

You don’t need to have any previous experience of studying English, but you must be committed to attending the sessions and achieving your qualification.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

We recommend that you bring a notebook, a pen and a folder to keep all of your work together.

What could I do next?

Your tutor will support you in deciding your next steps; you might choose to continue improving your English by working towards the next level of qualification or moving on to a related subject, such as creative writing or poetry.

You might choose instead to develop your maths or digital skills or to work towards a qualification in these areas.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
