The use of bright, warm colours in Mexican folk art is an essential part of its unique style. It is derived from long-standing traditions that the native populations have kept alive within their communities.

Those colours are found everywhere in Mexico – in the markets, the food, the clothes – and are more than just a cultural tradition; they are the reflection of the warm and lively culture which is experienced in Mexican everyday life.

In this session we will look at the effective use of colour to create dramatic and lively images typical of Mexican folk art. You will experiment with complementary colours and simple images and take home your own piece of art at the end of the course.

What do I need to join the course?

Just an interest in the subject!

It may be useful if you have attended Mexican Folk Art: Discovery, but this is not essential.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

Basic equipment, including paint, will be provided but please bring your own materials if you wish; pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, coloured crayons, felt tips etc.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught and supported by an experienced and enthusiastic tutor, take part in a range of activities including demonstrations, group and individual work and receive support for your own ideas.

What will I learn?

On this short course you will briefly explore the origins of Mexican folk art – look at some of the more famous images and artists from this time and then, with tutor support, have a go at creating your own Mexican influenced art image to take home with you.

What could I do next?

You may wish to develop your skills further by enrolling on one of our other art courses, or take part in other creative subjects such as photography, knitting, dressmaking, creative writing and fabric dyeing and printing. We also offer courses in English, Maths, computers and employability.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
