Course details

The Recruitment & Selection learning activities provides learners with the skills, knowledge and confidence to recruit and select the best person for the job using a fair and consistent approach. The course is broken down into six parts covering: Pre-Recruitment; Reviewing the Role; Advertising; Shortlisting & Selection; Interviews and Post-Recruitment. The learning is designed to apply the correct approaches using ERYC policies and procedures with consideration to our Vision, Values and Behaviours to ensure best practice across the organisation.

Please note, if you have completed the Recruitment and selection elearning in the past, you must also complete this course for the Recruitment and selection training to be fully completed.

What do I need to join the course?

  • All managers’ or those with responsibility for recruitment activities need to complete the R&S training.
  • NB At least one person on the recruitment panel MUST have completed the Full R&S training
  • This can also be accessed as a refresher for managers who feel they would benefit from updating their knowledge and skills in any of these modules.
  • This will require manager’s approval.

What do I need to bring with me for the first session?

No specific equipment is required to attend the course, although pens & paper for taking notes whilst the training is in progress may be useful. Due to current COVD 19 restrictions no refreshments will be provided if the course is delivered face to face so please bring your own

How will I learn?

In the current situation the R&S training is to be taught via MS Teams as a virtual classroom. This will be tutor led delivery with PowerPoint slides with some learner interaction. Additional reading will be required to support learning.

What will I learn?

This session aims to:

  • Equip learners with the knowledge needed to understand the importance of a structured recruitment and selection process, working in line with ERYC Vision, Values and Behaviours and appropriate policies and procedures, while meeting legislative requirements and the Equality Act.
  • Enable Learners to minimise the risk towards recruitment when appointing to roles where there will be contact with children, young people and / or vulnerable adults.
  • Provide learners with the knowledge of the process to be followed when an existing post becomes vacant or when a new post needs creating or if the post duties and responsibilities have changed significantly.
  • Equip learners with the knowledge needed to review the best approach for a vacancy, be it internal or external, and who to contact within the organisation for further support.
  • Provide learners with the knowledge of what needs to be included in the advert and apply the correct language, including advertising options in order to attract the best applicants
  • Enable learners to plan and prepare for an effective selection process in a fair and consistent manner using pre-determined shortlisting criteria.
  • Provide learners with the knowledge to plan and prepare for professional interviews and write meaningful interview questions using pre-determined criteria.
  • Equip learners with the knowledge needed to make an offer to the ‘preferred candidate’ in line with ERYC policies and procedures
  • Equip learners with the knowledge to provide meaningful feedback to candidates.
  • Provide learners with the knowledge of what is required for pre-employment checks to be completed and the steps required for the preferred candidate stage and apply the induction and probationary period process.
