Course details

Coaching is not an optional extra, it's an essential skill for leadership. You don't need to schedule special time in to coach people; instead coaching skills can be built in your day-to-day management conversations. They will enable you to develop your teams' skills, judgement and confidence. In this course you will learn how to coach to enable your team to find solutions rather than bring you problems, how to help your team learn from every challenge so they become more confident and self-reliant to unlock potential and improve team performance.

What do I need to join the course?

The course is for anyone who wants to develop their coaching skills and help individual develop, realise their potential and improve their performance. Successful coaching requires the ability to be able to show empathy and be good at building relationships, therefore strong communication skills will be required. In order to join this virtual learning course you will need:

A reliable internet connection, a webcam / camera and a computer/Laptop/Tablet/Smartphone, you may also choose to use a headset or earphones with a microphone attachment.

You may also wish to have a notepad and pen available for making any notes. You should ensure that you have a suitable place to study that is free from any distractions.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

This course is delivered via virtual learning on Microsoft Teams. You will not need to attend any classroom delivery but you will need to commit to attending the virtual sessions at the specified dates and times. In order to participate in the virtual sessions you will need access to the following:

  • Computer/Laptop/Smartphone/Tablet
  • Headset/earphones if required, including a microphone (unless you are able to work in an area where you will not be disturbed/disturb others
  • A reliable internet connection
  • An email address to access the virtual classroom
  • A means of using video conferencing e.g. integrated webcam, webcam, smart phone/tablet with camera
  • Teams app downloaded https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/microsoft-teams/download-app

You may find it useful to have a notebook and pen to make notes and you may be asked to submit work back to your tutor, therefore the ability to produce a text or word document that you can upload or email to your tutor will be beneficial.

How will I be taught?

Your learning will be supported online by an experienced trainer, this will be an interactive session and you will be able to take part in small and large group discussions and share your thoughts. Additional reading may be required to support learning.

What will I learn?

This session aims to equip learners with the knowledge and skills needed to be able to facilitate effective coaching conversations with their team. This will include understanding the benefits of coaching, the barriers and the shift towards a coaching culture at the council.  The skills needed to adopt a coaching style of leadership take time and commitment, however, through this course, leaders will be introduced to the practical and appropriate skills and tools needed to adopt a coaching style of management. It is an interactive session in which learners will:

  • Define coaching and the boundaries compared to other support interventions
  • Explore and raise awareness of potential opportunities; for example when coaching conversations can be used to enhance performance and resolve conflict.
  • Enable the space to explore different coaching models and work with peers in a safe environment to understand the importance of active listening, effective questioning, planning, delivering and evaluating coaching sessions.
  • Introduce learners to PRINT*, the council's chosen coaching diagnostic which focuses on unconscious motivators.

*Note, this course does NOT include access to the PRINT diagnostic.
