If you’d like to work in the voluntary sector or would like to develop your existing knowledge and understanding of the voluntary service, then this Try course will provide you with an opportunity to learn about a range of principles within the voluntary sector.

You’ll be introduced to the subject of volunteering and determine whether you would like to study the topic further. You will gain an understanding of the main principles of volunteering and its practical skills in order to improve your employability, explore what being a volunteer entails and the ways to become a volunteer, identify and discuss the personal standards and requirements for working in a volunteering role.

Upon successful completion of the course, you’ll have an understanding of how to make a positive difference in the voluntary sector and understand how gaining valuable experience as a volunteer can help when seeking employment. The course will also ensure that you are aware of how further study in this area will provide you with an opportunity to develop a broad range of soft skills that will further improve their employment prospects and personal development.

What will I learn?

You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of key principles. Upon successful completion of the course, you will know how to:

  • Understand the role of a volunteer within a voluntary organisation
  • Make an informed decision as to whether you would like to study the topic further.
  • Gain an understanding of the main principles of volunteering and its practical skills in order to improve their employability.
  • Explore what being a volunteer entails and the ways to become a volunteer.
  • Identify and discuss the personal standards and requirements for working in a volunteering role.

What do I need to join the course?

You don’t need any experience of volunteering at all, but you must be committed to attending the sessions and achieving your qualification.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

We recommend that you bring a notebook and a pen.

What could I do next?

You might like to gain a qualification and progress to a Level 1 Award in Volunteering course.

You might choose to improve your skills or work towards a qualification in English, maths or digital skills, or to develop your employability skills to help you to apply for a job, create or update your CV or improve your interview skills.
