Course details

This course has been developed to support the Council’s aspirations to be a more commercial, revenue generating Council. This course builds on the more theoretical Commercial business planning eLearn course that participants will have been expected to have completed prior to this course.

It focuses on the sections of an effective commercial business plan and how to go about writing one and who to involve. This course will allow interaction with other colleagues who are in the process of drafting commercial business plans or reviewing theirs.

What will I learn?

On this course you will learn:

  • The council's approach to commercial business planning and the purpose of commercial business planning in the wider context.
  • Which sections make up a commercial business plan and how they are connected.
  • How to develop an effective commercial business plan and the importance of engaging key stakeholders in the process.

The course will use a case study of a Council commercial business plan to structure the learning around the recommended nine sections of a commercial business plan.

How will I be taught?

The course is interactive and will include a range of discussion opportunities as a whole group and in smaller break out groups. There are a range of exercises to build learning and confidence and prompt discussion as well as feedback. There will be a mix of business planning theory and practical applied learning based on participants own knowledge.

What do I need to join the course?

This course is available to all staff, but is particularly appropriate for staff whose role involves the sourcing of commercial opportunities and supporting the development of business plans. In order to join this virtual course you will need a reliable internet connection and a computer/laptop/tablet or smartphone. You may also choose to use a headset or earphones.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

No specific equipment is required to attend the course, although pens and paper for taking notes whilst the training is in progress may be useful. You should ensure that you have a suitable place to study that is free from any distractions.

What could I do next?

If you wish to undertake further training you should discuss this with your line manager in the first instance. Details of other courses are available to view on the Course Booking System.
