Are you interested in working or volunteering in schools as a teaching assistant so you can inspire and support children and young people to learn? If so, then this five-week course is an essential starting point for the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification.
This Intro course is designed to give you an insight into the different roles available in schools, as well as the skills and knowledge you’ll need for your further study, so you can gain the confidence you need to progress to the next stage of your learning.
What will I learn?
You’ll learn about the role of the teaching assistant in schools and be introduced to the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification. You’ll gain an understanding of the skills and knowledge you will need for both further study and work within a school environment.
On this course you will:
- Learn about the Teaching Assistant role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis
- Gain an understanding of the Level 2 course criteria and content
- Learn how to write reflective accounts and statements of knowledge to record and consolidate your learning
- Write a personal development plan to identify your areas for further development
- Decide what your next step will be.

If you are looking for work or aiming for a change of role, then your tutor will also make you aware of the employability programmes we have available to support you in achieving your employment goals.

What do I need to join the course?
You do not need to have a school placement or disclosure and barring service (DBS) check in place to progress to the Introduction to Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools course.
Once you apply, you’ll be directed to join our Achieve Your English Goals sessions to measure your English, maths and digital skills prior to this course. Your tutor in these sessions will work with you to identify and address any skills gaps you may have before you progress to the Intro course, in order to make sure you have the skills and confidence required for Level 2 study right at the start of your learning journey.
In order to join this virtual learning course you will need:
- A reliable internet connection, a webcam or camera and a computer or laptop. You may also choose to use a headset or earphones with a microphone attachment. You should ensure that you have a suitable place to study that is free from any distractions.
- You will need to have access to Microsoft Teams, which is available as a free download. One of our Customer Information Assistants will call and support you before the course begins to make sure that you have everything set up ready to access your virtual sessions.
What do I need to provide for the first session?
You’ll need to be set up with access to the Microsoft Teams learning platform. You’ll also need either a notebook and pen or a word-processing application (such as Microsoft Word) in order to take notes.
What could I do next?
Your tutor will work with you during this Introduction to Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools course to help you to complete a personal development plan and to decide your next steps.
If you’re ready to move on to the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification, then your tutor will work with you to make sure you have your next steps in place and provide you with advice on securing the necessary school placement and DBS check.
Alternatively, you may decide to brush up your English, maths or digital skills before progressing to your qualification study, in which case your tutor will signpost you to the relevant Achieve Your Goals programme, where you can begin working towards a qualification, or set your own targets for improving your skills.
