What will I learn?

You will learn what autism spectrum disorder is, with an emphasis on raising awareness and understanding of the range of traits, strengths and differences that are associated with this neurodivergent condition. You’ll learn about the processes for diagnosing individuals, the kinds of support that are available for adults and children with a diagnosis and about what it means to be on the autistic spectrum. You’ll also learn about recent changes that have taken place in relation to the diagnosis of ASD and accepted terminology to use when discussing neurodivergent conditions that help to promote inclusivity.

What do I need to join the course?

You will learn about a range of traits, strengths and differences associated with autism spectrum disorder and how these can affect individuals differently. With an emphasis on raising awareness and understanding, you’ll find out individuals can go about gaining a diagnosis of ASD and you’ll learn about a range of resources, help and support that is available for both adults and children diagnosed with this neurodiverse condition, as well as those who support them personally and professionally.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

We recommend that you bring a notebook and a pen.

What could I do next?

You may progress to one or more of our other short neurodiversity courses, such as Understanding Dyslexia, Understanding Dyspraxia or Understanding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

You might also like to learn about mental health by enrolling on one of our qualifications, such as the Level 1 Award in Mental Wellbeing, Level 1 Award in Mental Health Awareness or Level 2 Certificate in Awareness of Mental Health Problems.

You might choose instead to work towards a qualification in English, maths or digital skills, or to develop your employability skills to help you to apply for a job, create or update your CV or improve your interview skills.

Alternatively, you may decide to explore our wider course offer, which includes subjects such as mindfulness, mental toughness and self-esteem and confidence building.
