Do you ever get lost in your own city? Do you wish you knew how to use your smartphone to get around more easily? If so, our course, Getting Around Like a Local with Your Smartphone, is for you.

In this course, you'll learn how to use apps like Google Maps, What3Words, and bus and train applications to plan journeys, find directions, and discover new places. You'll also learn how to use your smartphone to stay safe and connected while you're on the go.

Whether you're a local or a visitor, our course will teach you everything you need to know to get around with confidence. You'll learn how to:

  • Use Google Maps to find directions, estimate travel times, and explore your surroundings
  • Use What3Words to pinpoint any location in the world, even if you don't have an address
  • Use bus and train applications to plan your journey and track your ride
  • Use your smartphone to stay safe and connected while you're on the go

Our course is designed for beginners, so no prior knowledge of smartphones or navigation apps is required. You'll learn at your own pace and get the support you need from our experienced tutors.

What is it like to learn with East Riding Adult Learning and Employability?

At East Riding Adult Learning and Employability we pride ourselves on the support we give to our learners, from the very first time you contact us, to the day you achieve your goals.

If you choose to join this course you will be supported by our dedicated staff, learn in a small friendly and welcoming group, have the opportunity to take part in activities to practise your skills, be encouraged to continue to practise when you are away from the classroom and receive lots of encouragement to help you build both your skills and your confidence.

As well as working in groups, you will benefit from regular time working with your tutor, discussing your progress and planning your next steps. They will also tell you about all of the other great opportunities that you have access to including help with developing your skills, joining one of our creative skills classes or sessions to improve your health, wellbeing, confidence or resilience. If you are looking for work or aiming for a change of role, then your tutor will also make you aware of the employability programmes we have available to support you in achieving your employment goals.

Our team will be there to support you at every step of your journey and we always welcome your feedback to help us ensure that you feel safe, happy, supported and welcome.

What do I need to join the course?

A willingness to learn and a positive attitude! You should be comfortable with using a smartphone or tablet but no previous knowledge of using mapping/navigation apps is required. If you would like to learn more about this first, you might like to attend our Getting to Grips with Using Your Smartphone or Tablet course.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

You might find it useful to bring your own smartphone or tablet along to the session so that we can help you with using your very own device. We do have some tablets available in our centre for you to use if you do not have your own. You might also find it helpful to bring a notebook and pen to make some notes to help with your learning.

What could I do next?

You can choose to complete some of our other digital courses to improve your digital skills. As a next step, you could decide to learn more about communicating using your smartphone or using entertainment apps in our other smartphone and tablet courses.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
