Do you already have basic sewing machine skills?

On this course you will look at some of the more advanced techniques, allowing you to tackle most sewing tasks with confidence and ease.

You will learn how to insert pocket and concealed zips, how to effectively use gathering and understitching, how to create and use bias bindings and how to stabilise fabrics.

This course will enable you to take your sewing skills to the next level and create a professional finish to all your garments.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • how to prepare and execute an elasticated edge using the appropriate stitch
  • how to prepare and execute an elasticated channel
  • how to prepare and apply a machine sewn blind hem technique
  • how to use understitching.
  • how to apply the technique of gathering fabric
  • how to add concealed zips
  • how to add pocket zips
  • how to create and use bias strips to pipe and bind a corner
  • how to stabilise fabrics in a variety of situations

What do I need to join the course?

You should have basic sewing machine skills: you may have gained these on one of our other courses. It is not essential to have completed these if you already have experience.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

Please bring your own fabrics and other pieces of material that you want to use or incorporate into your work.

Your tutor will advise you on what other materials you will need during the first session.

What could I do next?

This course serves to provide you with a good foundation from which to embark on a range of other sewing courses such as Machine embroidery, Dressmaking, Soft furnishings, Patchwork and Quilting etc. Your tutor will give you more information about these opportunities during this course.
