Autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are terms that you might be hearing more and more often nowadays, but what do they actually mean? This three-hour session has been designed to give you an introduction to autism spectrum disorder, so you can understand what it is and how it can affect individuals differently in life, learning and work. You’ll come away with an understanding of the traits associated with autism spectrum disorder and an awareness of the help and support that is available to children and adults who have been diagnosed with this neurodivergent condition.
You will learn what autism spectrum disorder is, with an emphasis on raising awareness and understanding of the range of traits, strengths and differences that are associated with this neurodivergent condition. You’ll learn about the processes for diagnosing individuals, the kinds of support that are available for adults and children with a diagnosis and about what it means to be on the autistic spectrum.
You’ll also learn about recent changes that have taken place in relation to the diagnosis of ASD and accepted terminology to use when discussing neurodivergent conditions that help to promote inclusivity.
The course fee is displayed at the top of this page.

You don’t need any knowledge of neurodiversity or autism at all, just an interest in learning about this subject area.
We recommend that you bring a notebook and a pen.
You may progress to one or more of our other short neurodiversity courses, such as Understanding Neurodiversity, Understanding Dyslexia, Understanding Dyspraxia or Understanding ADHD.
You might also like to learn about mental health by enrolling on one of our qualifications, such as the Level 1 Award in Mental Wellbeing, Level 1 Award in Mental Health Awareness or Level 2 Certificate in Awareness of Mental Health Problems.
Alternatively, you may decide to explore our wider course offer, which includes subjects like mindfulness, mental toughness and confidence building, as well as qualifications in English, maths and digital skills.
You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
