Are you looking to improve your understanding and use of numeracy skills in your daily life, at home and at work, or perhaps you want to brush up on the skills that would help you solve problems using and applying numbers in everyday situations? If so, then our Multiply - Christmas Advent Calendar (Soft furnishings) course could be the opportunity you are looking for to help you to build your confidence and develop your numeracy skills.

You’ll start your learning by coming along to our friendly, welcoming spaces, where you’ll meet one of our tutors, discuss what it is you want to achieve and do some skills assessments to help you to provide us with a clear picture of your actual needs. Depending on the level of skills you currently have, this may involve spending more time in the Multiply sessions to build your skills and confidence or moving quickly into the qualification course.

What will I learn?

In this free soft furnishings session you will identify and discuss the numeracy skills required to make your Christmas Advent Calendar. You will then apply these skills so you can accurately measure the size of the background and evenly space out pockets, count, calculate area, adapt the design to ensure the stencil fits the area (scaling up and down), estimate fabric quantity etc. On completion of the session you will be able to take your Christmas Advent Calendar away and make an informed decision on whether to continue with more learning.

What is it like to learn with East Riding Adult Learning and Employability?

At East Riding Adult Learning and Employability we pride ourselves on the support we give to our learners, from the very first phone call, right through to achieving your learning aims and beyond to ensure that you have the skills, knowledge and resources you need to reach your goals.

When you enrol on a Multiply course, your tutor will work with you to give you advice on the best ways to develop your everyday number skills and what progression opportunities we have for you. They will discuss the support we have available and together you will plan out your learning journey.

All of our sessions and functional skills courses take place in small, friendly and welcoming classes, where you will have the opportunity to take part in activities to practice your skills independently and as part of a group.

You'll have 1-1 time with your tutor to discuss your progress and identify opportunities for further development. Your tutor will work with you to make sure that you always have the support you need to achieve your learning aim and to give you information about other opportunities you can access, whether this is developing your maths or digital skills or exploring options that are relevant to your wider goals.

What do I need to join the course?

You don’t need to have any previous experience in studying maths, but you must be committed to attending the sessions and achieving your qualification.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

We recommend that you bring a notebook, a pen, and a folder to keep your work together.

What could I do next?

When you’ve completed your learning, you will have the opportunity to discuss your next steps with our team. You might choose to continue improving your Maths by working towards the next level of qualification or moving on to a related subject, such as creative writing or poetry.

You might choose instead to develop your English or digital skills or to work towards a qualification in these areas. Alternatively, you may decide to learn about mental health, neurodiversity or employability skills or explore our wider course offer, which includes topics such as photography, arts and crafts and mindfulness. Please discuss options available with your tutor or follow the link below to explore our range of courses available on the Course Booking System.
