Increasing number of studies, backed by scientific research, suggest that slowing down and being more ‘in the moment’ can help to ease feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress. Being able to fully focus on something helps the mind relax and expand, which will help you be more present when carrying out other tasks in your daily life. These sessions use pottery as the focus as it can be incredibly relaxing and the creative process is the perfect distraction from everyday stresses and strains.

On this course you will explore practise of ‘being in the moment’ through the application of basic slab building techniques. You will be guided by our tutor to develop the techniques and apply them in your personalised work. The sessions will offer you chance to reflect on what relaxation techniques work for you and how you could use pottery as a creative means to promote your wellbeing.

What will I learn?

You will:

  • learn about Health and Safety and recommended studio practice
  • record your personal progress in a journal
  • learn how to design and build slab pieces
  • take time to be ‘in the moment’ and fully enjoy the activity
  • learn how to burnish and decorate your ceramic piece
  • identify one strategy you will adopt to aid relaxation in the future

How much will it cost?

This course is funded through Tailored Learning with the purpose of improving your health and well-being. The cost is shown further up on the page, but a concession may be available dependent on circumstances.
