The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is an ideal qualification for anyone wishing to work as a teaching assistant in a school. This course is aimed at those who would like to take up their first role in a school, as well as those already employed, but who do not yet have a qualification in supporting teaching and learning.
This qualification covers a range of essential skills and knowledge required to work effectively in a support role and to understand your role and responsibilities, such as child and young person development, safeguarding, communication, equality and diversity and supporting learning activities.
To enable you to demonstrate your learning you must be spend a minimum of ten hours per week in school, either in a paid or volunteer capacity.

You’ll learn about the role and responsibilities of the teaching assistant and will have the opportunity to demonstrate and apply your learning in a school environment as part of your work placement.

During your learning your tutor will give you advice to support you with your next steps and they’ll also tell you about all of the other great opportunities that you have access to, including help with developing your maths and English skills, joining one of our creative skills classes or sessions to improve your health, wellbeing, confidence or resilience. If you are looking for work or aiming for a change of role, then your tutor will also make you aware of the employability programmes we have available to support you in achieving your employment goals.

You must have successfully completed the 5-week Introduction to supporting teaching and learning in schools course, be confident in the use of IT and be working at Level 2 in your English skills.
You will also require a minimum of 10 hours a week in a school in either a paid or voluntary capacity, together with a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance.

You’ll need to be set up with access to the Microsoft Teams learning platform. You’ll also need either a notebook and pen or a word-processing application (such as Microsoft Word) in order to take notes.
Your tutor will work with you during your learning to support you in deciding your next steps. You may decide to work towards a qualification in English, maths or IT to support you with your future employment, or you may wish to consider further qualifications related to your work in schools, such as the Level 2 certificate in Awareness of bullying in children and young people or the Level 2 certificate in Behaviour that challenges in children.
Alternatively, you may decide to learn about mental health, neurodiversity or employability skills or explore our wider course offer, which includes topics such as photography, arts and crafts and mindfulness.
