Let your creative journey unfold in one of Yorkshire’s most inspiring locations, Sewerby Hall and Gardens near the beautiful seaside resort of Bridlington, through a day of colour, calm, and artistic discovery with Art for Leisure: Create Your Inner Artist at Sewerby Hall.

This is more than learning; it is the start of your artistic adventure, a day of creativity, self-expression, and mindful exploration, set within the peaceful beauty of the Orangery in Sewerby Hall. It is designed especially for those wishing to explore landscape painting, this unique experience invites you to step away from the everyday and reconnect with your creative self.

Guided by your passionate tutor, you will learn the foundations of landscape art, experimenting with colour mixing, brushwork, and composition. You’ll also discover how to prepare and stretch paper correctly, equipping you with essential skills and techniques to support your artistic journey.

Your day begins in the serene setting of the Orangery at Sewerby Hall, where inspiration flows and creativity takes root. From there, you’ll explore the grounds, drawing ideas from the natural beauty around you before settling into your own painting space to bring your landscape to life.

Throughout the day, you’ll enjoy refreshments, including freshly brewed teas and coffees, croissants and pastries in the morning, and bacon or sausage sandwiches mid-morning. A delicious lunch is also included, with the opportunity to choose from the excellent menu at the charming Clock Tower Cafe.

All the materials you need will be provided for you, including your own easel, canvas board, paints, and brushes, and you’ll take everything home with you, so you can continue painting and exploring your creativity beyond the day.

The afternoon offers dedicated time to paint, with gentle guidance and support from your tutor, as you create your own landscape artwork in this truly relaxing and inspiring setting.

No previous experience is needed, only a desire to paint, a willingness to explore, and a heart ready to create.

What will I learn?

Discover how to bring landscapes to life by learning simple yet effective techniques to blend colours, create depth, and capture natural beauty on the page. Explore how mood and atmosphere can be expressed through brushwork, texture, and creative colour choices. Gain hands-on experience in preparing and stretching paper, using traditional watercolour landscape techniques. Most of all, enjoy the freedom to experiment, express yourself, and grow in confidence as you create your own unique landscapes.

What do I need to join the course?

No previous experience is needed to join this exciting opportunity.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

You don’t need to bring any art materials, everything you need for the day will be provided, including your own easel, canvas board, paints, and brushes, all of which you’ll take home at the end of the session.

We recommend bringing:

  • An old shirt or apron (or wearing clothes you don’t mind getting paint on)
  • A sturdy bag or carrier to take your new art equipment home comfortably
  • A refillable water bottle (optional, as refreshments are provided throughout the day)
  • Weather-appropriate clothing if you wish to spend time in the gardens for inspiration (e.g., coat, sun hat, etc.)

Most importantly, bring a relaxed attitude and a willingness to explore your creativity—this day is for you to enjoy!
