If you would like to feel more confident using English in everyday life, this supportive course is designed for you. It is intended for adults referred by our Learner Experience Advisers or tutors who would benefit from improving specific English skills before progressing to an accredited qualification.

During these sessions, you will build your confidence in reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will develop practical skills that can help you communicate more clearly, understand important information and complete everyday tasks with greater independence.

You will learn in a friendly and supportive environment where activities can be adapted to your individual needs. You will be encouraged to learn at your own pace, ask questions and practise your skills without worrying about making mistakes. The course can help you prepare for further learning, including an accredited English qualification.

What will I learn?

By the end of the course, you will have developed practical English skills and greater confidence. As the course is tailored to your individual needs, you may:

  • Identify and address gaps in your English skills: Work with your tutor to identify the areas where you need support and take part in activities designed around your starting point and goals.
  • Improve your reading skills: Develop your ability to understand everyday written information, such as letters, instructions, forms, signs, emails and online information.
  • Develop your writing skills: Practise writing clearly and accurately for everyday situations, including completing forms, writing messages and emails, and organising your ideas.
  • Build your speaking and listening skills: Become more confident expressing your ideas, listening to others, asking questions and taking part in conversations and discussions.
  • Apply English to everyday situations: Use your developing skills for practical tasks related to home, work, learning and the wider community.
  • Prepare for further learning: Build the skills, confidence and study habits needed to progress to an accredited English course when you are ready.

This course supports the Tailored Learning purpose of helping learners develop essential skills and prepare for further learning.

What is it like to learn with East Riding Adult Learning and Employability?

At East Riding Adult Learning and Employability, we pride ourselves on the support we give to our learners, from the first time you contact us through to the day you achieve your learning goals.

If you choose to join this course, you will be supported by our dedicated staff throughout your learning. You will learn in a small group and take part in a range of activities designed to help you develop your English skills. You will also be encouraged to practise what you have learned outside the classroom, helping you to build your skills, knowledge and confidence.

As well as working alongside other learners, you will have regular opportunities to work with your tutor. Your tutor will give you feedback, discuss your progress and help you access information, advice and guidance about other courses, resources or opportunities that could help you reach your goals.

Our wider team can also help you access employability programmes, health and wellbeing support and additional courses. We welcome your feedback and will work with you to ensure that you feel safe, happy, supported and welcome while learning with us.

What do I need to join the course?

You do not need any qualifications or previous experience to join this course. Before you start, you will have a chat with one of our advisers. This will help us understand your existing English skills, what you would like to improve and whether this is the right course for you.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

You do not need to bring anything with you. We will provide the materials and resources you need. You can bring a pen and some paper if you would like to make notes, but this is optional. Just come along ready to take part, practise your skills and learn in a supportive environment. Your tutor will make sure you feel welcome and ready to get started.

What could I do next?

At the end of the course, we will help you consider your next steps. Depending on your starting point and goals, this could include progressing to another English course, working towards an accredited English qualification or developing your skills for employment, volunteering or further learning. Your tutor or adviser will discuss the available options with you and help you choose a suitable next step.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
