This short employability course will help you to understand how to match your skills and experience to job requirements.

You will analyse a chosen job advert to identify essential and desirable skills and knowledge and assess how your own skills fit these criteria.

The course covers explaining and evidencing how personal experience meets job requirements, adapting a CV and covering letter for specific roles, and creating effective STAR examples (Situation Task Action Result) to demonstrate your skills in applications and interviews.

What will I learn?

On this course you will learn how to:

  • Explain the importance of tailoring job applications to meet employer requirements.
  • Analyse job descriptions to identify key skills, essential criteria, and employer expectations.
  • Match your own skills and experience to the job requirements effectively.
  • Adapt and tailor your CV for a specific job role.
  • Adapt and tailor a covering letter to reflect relevant strengths and experiences.
  • Use appropriate language, keywords, and examples to increase application success.
  • Produce a tailored CV and covering letter suitable for submitting to an employer.
  • Give STAR examples.

You don’t need any qualifications or experience to join this course. Before you start you will have a chat with one of our advisors to make sure this is the right course for you.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

You will need to bring a notebook and pen, as well as details of your education and employment history.
