If you are learning English as a second language and want to improve your skills, this course is an ideal place to start.

This short course is designed to help you prepare for studying ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). You can use it as a stepping stone to an ESOL qualification, or simply to improve an area of your English, such as speaking, listening, reading, or writing.

You will learn in a friendly and supportive environment with other ESOL learners and work with a tutor who will help you build your confidence and develop your skills. The course will also help you decide on your next steps and support you in working towards your personal goals.

What will I learn?

On this course, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop a specific area of ESOL that matters to you
  • Build confidence and practise your communication skills
  • Prepare for further learning, such as studying an ESOL qualification

How much will it cost?

The cost of the course is shown at the top of the page. A concession may be available, dependent upon eligibility.

What is it like to learn with East Riding Adult Learning and Employability?

At East Riding Adult Learning and Employability we pride ourselves on the support we give to our learners, from the very first time you contact us, to the day you achieve your goals.

If you choose to join this course you will be supported by our dedicated staff, learn in a small friendly and welcoming group, have the opportunity to take part in activities to practise your skills, be encouraged to continue to practise when you are away from the classroom and receive lots of encouragement to help you build both your skills and your confidence.

As well as working in groups, you will benefit from regular time working with your tutor, discussing your progress and planning your next steps. They will also tell you about all of the other great opportunities that you have access to including help with developing your skills, joining one of our creative skills classes or sessions to improve your health, wellbeing, confidence or resilience. If you are looking for work or aiming for a change of role, then your tutor will also make you aware of the employability programmes we have available to support you in achieving your employment goals.

Our team will be there to support you at every step of your journey and we always welcome your feedback to help us ensure that you feel safe, happy, supported and welcome, when you learn with us.

What do I need to join the course?

You don’t need any qualifications or experience to join this course, but you should want to develop one or more areas of ESOL. Before you start you will have a chat with one of our advisors to make sure this is the right course for you.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

Everything will be provided for you, but you may choose to bring your own notebook, pen, and folder.

What could I do next?

You’ll work with your tutor to discuss your progression options, whether this is further development of your ESOL skills, learning in another subject area, or looking for new or improved employment opportunities.
