Get into the festive spirit with this creative Christmas craft session, where you’ll make a beautiful handmade Christmas hanging decoration to keep, display or give as a thoughtful seasonal gift.
During the session, you’ll choose a design, create a simple paper pattern and use it to cut your fabric or felt pieces. You’ll then assemble, tack, stitch and stuff your decoration before adding finishing touches such as ribbons, buttons, beads, lace or tassels.
A selection of fabrics and materials will be supplied, but you are welcome to bring your own fabric, felt or decorative items if you would like to personalise your decoration. This is a lovely opportunity to enjoy festive making and learn skills you can use again at home, to create more decorations year after year.
What will I learn?
During the session, you’ll learn how to plan and make a Christmas hanging decoration from fabric or felt.
You’ll learn how to create and use a simple paper pattern, cut fabric pieces accurately, tack your design together and stitch it by hand or using a sewing machine.
You’ll also learn how to stuff and finish your decoration, adding embellishments and decorative details to create an individual festive piece. The tutor will show you how the design can be adapted so you can continue making more decorations at home.

What do I need to join the course?
No previous experience is needed. This workshop is suitable for beginners and for those with some sewing or craft experience.
You just need enthusiasm for making and a willingness to have a go. If you have never used a sewing machine before, or feel out of practice, the tutor will support you throughout the session.
What do I need to provide for the first session?
All main materials will be supplied, including a selection of fabrics or felt. You may bring your own fabric or felt if you would like to use particular colours, patterns or materials.
You are also welcome to bring your own beads, lace, ribbon, buttons or other decorative items, if you would like to personalise your Christmas hanging decoration.
What could I do next?
You could use the skills learned to make more handmade Christmas decorations at home, create personalised festive gifts, or join further Learning for Leisure sewing and craft workshops.
