If you would you like to be able to make your own clothing or accessories then dressmaking is a great skill that enables you to make unique and original clothing to wear yourself or for your family and friends. Making it yourself ensures that the look and fit is perfect. If you already have some very basic dressmaking skills, this course will help you to develop them further, showing you how to alter patterns to your own requirements and use additional functions on the sewing machine. You will be able to take home with you any pieces you make on the course.

What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What do I need to join the course?

You must have basic dressmaking skills. You may benefit from having attended the getting started with dressmaking course but this is not essential. Some basic maths skills would be an advantage as you will need to be able to do some simple calculations to use rulers and other measuring equipment.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

For this course you should bring with you, your choice of one of the following patterns. Simplicity 1693, New Look 6344 or New Look 6434. You will also need to bring along either cotton fabric or poly cotton with matching thread. If you have your own dressmaking scissors, chalk, pencil and tape measure then please bring them with you, however, don’t worry if not, as we will have supplies available in the classroom.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught and supported by an experienced and enthusiastic tutor, take part in a range of activities including demonstrations, group and individual work and receive support for your own ideas. You may wish to carry out work outside the classroom to ensure you gain the required skills and knowledge to achieve.

What will I learn?

On this course you will learn how to use the sewing machine over locker, how to use buttonhole stitch and make a button placket, how to alter a commercial pattern to your own requirements and how to add embellishments to your garment. You will complete a garment to take home with you.

What could I do next?

You may wish to develop your skills further with our Moving on with dressmaking skills course. Your tutor will provide more information about this at the end of your course.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
