If you’re looking for a career in a school (or another educational establishment, like a college or nursery) and you’ve already completed our Introduction to Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools and Award in Support Work in Schools course then this is the ideal next step.

On it you’ll get a great overview of the knowledge you’ll need to work in an educational setting. You’ll cover safeguarding, communication and much more.

This award is great for any kind of school employee, not just those directly supporting learning. So, whether you’re looking for a career as a teaching assistant, working in educational administration or catering or as part of the site team you’ll find what you learn invaluable.

What’s more it’s a knowledge-based qualification, which means that you don’t need to be working in a school or have a placement already.

What do I need to join the course?

You must have successfully completed our ‘Introduction to Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools and the Award in Support Work in Schools’ course and have a good level of written English (Level 2) and ICT skills.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

You may find it useful to have a notebook and pen to make notes and you may be asked to submit work back to your tutor, therefore the ability to produce a text or word document that you can upload or email to your tutor will be beneficial.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught and supported by experienced tutors. The course will include tutor input, small group work and online learning. Attendance at sessions is important to ensure that you are successful. As well as group sessions you will be required to carry out independent study at home in order to successfully complete this course.

What will I learn?

On this course you will develop your knowledge in child and young person development, diversity and inclusion, effective communication and safeguarding in a school environment and schools as organisations.

What qualification will I get?

On successful completion of the course you will receive the recognised vocational qualification City and Guilds Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools. You will achieve the qualification by successfully completing all course work.

What can this course lead to?

Having completed this course you may wish to add the additional units, (without needing to duplicate learning) required in order to achieve the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting teaching and learning in schools (STLS). Your tutor will discuss the best options for you during the course.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
