For many people, using computers has become a part of daily life – and there’s no denying that being able to use a computer well can be hugely beneficial, from browsing online shops to keeping in touch with friends and family.

But if you’ve never used a computer before, how do you get started?

This Computers for Complete Beginners course is one great option. Over six weeks, you’ll learn with one of our friendly, knowledgeable tutors in one of our well-equipped training rooms. We’ll start with the absolute basics of turning a computer on and off, and work from there – by the end, we’ll have covered how to use a mouse and keyboard, creating and saving documents, using the internet and much more.

Then if you want to learn more, there’s the option to move on to one of our Computers for Improvers courses, which will build on the skills you’ve learnt while introducing new things to try.

What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. Although things will look different, our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and we’re really excited to welcome learners back.

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What do I need to join the course?

Once we receive your application a member of staff will give you a call to discuss if this is the right course and level for you. You don’t need any prior experience of using a computer, but it would be helpful if you have access to a computer to practise between taught sessions.

What do I need to bring with me to the first meeting?

A notebook and pen. If you prefer to bring your own laptop to use, this is fine. We have free wifi in all our classrooms.

How will I be taught?

This course will be delivered by an experienced tutor in one of our computer suites. The sessions will include demonstrations as well as group activities and individual exercises.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • how to start up the computer and log off/shut down a computer correctly
  • how to use a keyboard and mouse
  • how to open, save and close your work
  • how to create a document with text and print it out
  • how to use the internet to find out about council services

What will happen next?

You may want to continue learning computer and digital skills by attending our Improve your computer and digital skills course, where you can choose from a range of accredited or non-accredited options. You could also choose from one of our other ICT themed courses such as online shopping or recognising scams and associated risks.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to talk about this and any other support we can provide.
