If you’d like to work in the catering sector or would like to develop your existing knowledge and understanding of the food safety and catering service, then this Level 2 qualification will provide you with an opportunity to learn about a range of principles within this sector.

This unit will provide candidates with knowledge of the parameters of basic food safety practice as relevant to the catering industry. Achievement of the unit at Level 2 will enable learners to identify how to make changes to catering practice, in order to improve the safety of the catering service as a whole. This unit provides candidates with a range of food safety skills directly relevant to the catering and hospitality industry.

You’ll learn about sources and risks to food safety, how to deal with food spoilage, describe safe food handling practices and procedures, importance of temperature controls, stock control procedures etc., from high-risk groups, Microbial, chemical, pesticides (e.g. rodenticides, insecticides), Physical (mercury, plasters, equipment (nuts, bolts), bits of clothing or PPE, flaking paint, glass, and Allergenic.  You’ll also learn about using the importance of personal standards and requirements for working within this sector.

Learners will work toward a formal assessment; this unit will be assessed by a multiple-choice online test covering underpinning knowledge.

Upon successful completion of the course, you’ll have an understanding of how to make a positive difference within the catering and hospitality sector; how to work safely, understand food safety hazards, and legal responsibilities.  All of which will provide you with valuable experience for seeking employment and have a Level 2 qualification to add to your CV, to support you in moving towards a career within the food industry.

What will I learn?

You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of key principles, including regulations and standards that must be adhered to. Upon successful completion of the course, you will know how to:

  • understand how individuals can take personal responsibility for food safety;
  • understand the importance of keeping him/herself clean and hygienic;
  • understand the importance of keeping the work areas clean and hygienic;
  • understand the importance of keeping food safe.

This course is funded through the Adult Skills Fund, as a part of accredited learning. The course cost is displayed at the top of the page. A concession may be available dependent on circumstances.

What do I need to join the course?

You don’t need any previous experience of catering and hospitality industry at all, but you must be committed to attending the sessions and achieving your qualification.

Please bring a notebook, a pen, and a folder to keep your work together.

What qualifications can I get?

On successful completion of the course, you will obtain the Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering from City & Guilds.

What could I do next?

When you’ve completed your learning, you will have the opportunity to discuss your next steps with our team. You might choose to gain the next level of qualification and progress to a Level 3 Award in Food Safety and Catering course.
