If you’re new to poetry or would like to develop your existing skills and knowledge, then this six-week course will introduce you to a range of different styles and structures of poetry and give you an opportunity to explore new ways of writing.

You’ll start by exploring how non-rhyming poetry is structured using techniques such as iambic pentameter, then move on to looking at ways to use voice and persona in your poetry to create dramatic effect through monologue. Next, you’ll learn about a range of different poetic formats, including odes, ballads and sonnets so you can have a go at practising what you’ve learned and gain experience writing in a variety of different styles.

By the end of the course, you’ll have had the opportunity to experiment with composing poetry in a range of styles and structures and will have learned to how use voice and persona in your writing to enable you to express your thoughts, feeling and ideas on a variety of themes. You’ll receive support and feedback throughout your learning to give you the knowledge and experience you need to continue writing poetry outside of the classroom.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to:

  • Write in blank verse and to use iambic pentameter
  • Use voice and persona in your writing to create dramatic effect
  • Compose poetry in stanzas
  • Write poetry in the ode and ballad structures
  • Compose ballads and villanelles
  • Use the sonnet format to compose poetry.

What do I need to join the course?

You don’t need any experience of writing poetry at all, just an interest in the subject and the willingness to get involved and to have a go putting pen to paper.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

We recommend that you bring a notebook and a pen.
